5 Brothers In Arms

by Raymond C. Heimbuch

Non-fiction, History, Memoir, World War II

List: $19.99

Special discount $15.00 plus $2.00 Shipping

This book starts with our becoming POW's, with a brief flash back telling how we got there, then goes on to tell about my POW life, and as each of my brothers who is not already mentioned joins the service, he gets a separate chapter telling his war experience, and goes on to tell what happens to each of them up until the present time.  Essentially it tells what we did during the war and then what we did up until the present time.

REVIEWS:

"This is a true story about our ordeal as POWs.  Ray’s sharp memory tells the story of our starvation and suffering as Japanese POWs.  Our friendship is one reason we did survive by helping each other, especially on the “Hell Ships” from Mindanao to Japan, a horrific journey of ninety-two days.  Ours was not to reason why – ours was to do or die." - Bob Dowding, Japanese POW,  Author: A few Survived.

"I’ve known Ray and George Heimbuch since 1941, while assigned to the 5th Air Base Group.  This relationship has lasted to today.  It was interrupted in May 1942 when the unit was surrendered to Japanese forces in the Philippines. We shared similar experiences in POW camps until our liberation in 1945. Afterward we stayed in the Air Force, got married, and raised families.  At Survivor Reunions we share experiences, good and bad.  Memories fade, but the tales get better. May our memories of the footlocker fifth remain with us forever."  --  Walt Regehr, another survivor!

Flying for Her Country

By Amy Goodpaster Strebe

$39.95

Praeger Security International

Flying for Her Country is the first comparative study to be written about the American Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) and the Soviet airwomen who flew combat missions along the Eastern Front during World War II.

REVIEWS:

“Amy Goodpaster Strebe’s book is excellent … meticulously researched, well-written, and convincingly argued and documented. One of the book’s great strengths is a comprehensive bibliography that makes it particularly valuable as a reference for students and professionals alike.” Air & Space / Smithsonian

“I really enjoyed the book. It tells the true story of how women were involved in aviation during the war.” – General Chuck Yeager

“Before reading Flying for Her Country I never imagined that the Russian women military pilots of WWII had the same values (honor, integrity, courage, commitment, faith, patriotism, service and sacrifice) as America’s WWII women pilots. This fascinating book portrays a significant chapter in history that is not found in most history books. It is educational, motivational and inspirational as it chronicles the history of how these young women military pilots proved that, no matter the challenge, no matter your nationality, and no matter how difficult the mission, you can do anything, if it’s the right thing to do and you put your mind to it.”– Deanie Bishop Parrish, WASP (Class 44-W-4)

“Strebe has done an outstanding job researching and writing about the invaluable contributions made by women pilots in the Second World War. As pioneers in military aviation, the WASP proved to the world that they were indeed capable of flying both fighter and bomber aircraft. In the case of the Soviet women aviators who saw combat along the Eastern Front, their indomitable spirit and heroism in battle have made them legendary. A book depicting the combined achievements of these intrepid military airwomen is long over due. I highly recommend it.” – Dr. Peggy Chabrian, President and Founder, Women in Aviation, International

“Strebe’s book offers a beautifully written, well-researched account of a little known but fascinating aspect of World War II. Her story of these women aviators in the U.S. and USSR is both dramatic and moving. Their courage is truly remarkable. Equally amazing is the way they were treated by their respective governments because of their gender. Strebe’s book is not to be missed by anyone interested in women’s history and military history.” - Dr. Mary Pickering, Professor of History, San Jose State University

Hell Hawks!: The Untold Story of the American Fliers Who Savaged Hitler's Wehrmacht

by Robert F. Dorr & Thomas D. Jones

Non-fiction, History, World War II

Hard Cover

$24.95

Hell Hawks! is the story of the band of young American fighter pilots, and their gritty, close-quarters fight against Hitlers vaunted military. The "Hell Hawks" were the men and machines of the 365th Fighter Group. Beginning just prior to D-Day, June 6, 1944, the groups young pilots (most were barely twenty years old and fresh from flight training in the United States) flew in close support of Eisenhowers ground forces as they advanced across France and into Germany. They flew the rugged, heavily armed P-47 Thunderbolt, aka the Jug. Living in tents amid the cold mud of their front-line airfields, the 365ths daily routine had much in common with that of the G.I.s they supported. Their war only stopped with the Nazi surrender on May 8, 1945. During their year in combat, the Hell Hawks paid a heavy price to win the victory. Sixty-nine pilots and airmen died in the fight across the continent. The Groups 1,241 combat missions -- the daily confrontation of sudden, violent death -- forged bonds between these men that remain strong sixty years later. This book will tell their story, the story of the Hell Hawks.

REVIEWS:

Veteran aviation author Dorr and astronaut a Jones have produced a riveting account of the gritty and unheralded war fought by young Thunderbolt pilots of the Ninth Air Force. Through dozens of interviews, the authors let the voices of pilots and ground crewmen tell what it was like to fly daily into the teeth of Luftwaffe fighters and Wehrmacht flak to help win the victory in Europe. This book represents the 17 other Ninth Air Force fighter-bomber combat groups.
